Corona Margarita (COMA)
5 (1)

The Margarita is widely accepted as a cocktail from Mexico.  Margarita is Spanish for “daisy” and this cocktail is believed to be related to a popular Mexican drink, the Daisy, but remade with tequila instead of brandy.  It became popular during Prohibition as U.S. residents travelled to Mexico for alcohol.  Mixing the tang of lime and the sweetness of orange liqueur with the distinctive strength of tequila, the classic Margarita remains one of the most popular cocktails in North America.  This recipe amps up the classic Margarita flavor by adding the smokiness of mezcal and subtle flavor of beer.  We call it the COMA.

Here is how you make a COMA.  First prepare the glasses.  Rim the glasses with lime juice, dip in kosher salt and pop in the freezer for a few minutes.  Then add ½ cup ice to a shaker with 2 ounces of silver tequila, ½ ounce of mezcal (more if you like the smoky taste), 1 ½ ounce of triple sec and the juice of one lime.  Shake for 30 seconds until the shaker is very cold.  Then add 2 ounces of Corona beer and stir.  If you shake it, the beer will foam up.

Pour into the prepared glasses, garnish with lime, and enjoy your COMA.

  1. Loving this cocktail. The addition of the mescal and beer take it to a class all it’s own. But it’s a sipping drink—unless you’re looking to end up comatose!
