Pimm’s Cocktail

Years ago, I went to the beach to visit friends and the host Jerry offered me a Pimm’s Cocktail when I arrived.  I did not know who Pimm’s was, but I was curious.  Right then and there I fell in love with Pimm’s.  He explained that Pimm’s Cup is an English brand of a gin-based fruit cup but may also be considered a liqueur and has been around since the 1820s.  Its most popular product is Pimm’s No. 1 Cup and is used to make a Pimm’s Cocktail.

Pimm’s is most popular in England. It is one of the two staple drinks at the Wimbledon tennis tournament – the other being champagne. Every year, over 80,000 pints of Pimm’s cocktail are sold to spectators.  Along with champagne, it has been declared one of two official drinks of Wimbledon.  It is also popular among British universities and at polo matches.

Pimm’s Cocktail is one of my favorite summer drinks today.  And I make it like Jerry made it.  Into a glass with ice, pour 1 ½ ounces of Pimm’s No. 1 and 6 ounces of ginger ale.  Stir and garnish with a cucumber spear.  And that is it!

There are several variations of Pimm’s.  Rather than ginger ale it can also be served mixed with a clear and carbonated lemonade or with champagne.  There are also various other chopped garnishes you can use including chopped apple, orange, lemon, or strawberry.  But I like it just the way Jerry made.  Enjoy!
