This is less of a recipe and more of a reminder of a terrific snack: Trail Mix. Trail Mix was first suggested in the early 1900s by Horace Kephart in his popular camping guide for campers. Since then, campers and hikers alike have turned to trail mix because it is lightweight, easy to store, nutritious, and provides a quick energy boost from the carbohydrates in the dried fruit or granola, and sustained energy from fat in nuts. Outside the U.S., it is known as Scroggin or ‘student fodder.’
Trail Mix remains popular today because of its versatility. You can use whatever ingredients you choose and make it as healthy (or not) as you wish. It is a great on-the-go snack or to keep in your pantry for snacking. My sister recently gifted me a bag of her Trail Mix and it is one of my favorites. Here is how she makes it.
Combine 32 ounces of roasted mixed nuts, 6 ounces of roasted shelled pistachios, 18 ounces of peanut butter M & M’s, 12 ounces of dry roasted macadamia nuts, 6 ounces of dried cherries, 6 ounces of raisins and 6 ounces of semi-sweet chocolates. Mix it all together and keep in an airtight bag or container for days.
If you have not enjoyed Trail Mix in a while, I hope this served as a helpful reminder of how tasty and easy it is to make and gave you ideas of creating your own. Enjoy!
