I am not a fan of shortcuts in the kitchen. I think food is always best prepared from scratch using fresh ingredients. There are those casual dining times, however, that I just want to throw some ingredients together and have a dish that tastes good. Although I hate the name, a dump cake fits that bill.
Not surprising, dump cake is an American invention and is like a cobbler but with a cake-like topping. It gets its moniker because it is prepared by dumping ingredients – usually canned fruit or pie filling and a boxed cake mix – into a pan without mixing. The origins are a bit unclear, but many believe it became popular in the 1950s around the same time many home bakers turned to boxed cake mixes. Of course, you can use whatever fruit you wish but I am a southerner who loves peaches. So here is how I make a Peach Dump Cake.
Prepare a 9 x 13 baking dish with cooking spray. Add 2 21-ounce cans of Peach Pie Filling and Topping. I think Duncan Hines Comstock is the best. Sprinkle over a box of yellow cake mix. Dot the top with one stick of butter cut into cubes. Finally, sprinkle over ground cinnamon to taste. Pop into a pre-heated 375-degree oven and cook for 45 – 50 minutes until the top is brown and the cake is done.
And that is it. Of course, it is always best served warm with a big ole scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
This sounds great. I have never seen a dump cake where the cake mix is put in first and the fruit on top. If prepared this way you won’t have those dry tops here and there from the moisture not getting to the top.
The cake mix is not put in first. And the butter on top helps keep in moist.
I am trying this cake and understood is as putting the cake in first and then the fruit on top. Oh dear. I shall see how the cake comes out. I hope it’s delicious regardless. Thanks for sharing this.
Hey LaToya. NO, you put the fruit in first then sprinkle the cake mix over it. Good luck!
Hey Raymond! I made this cake for my Apache brothers and sisters in Christ for after church. I ended up doing it the wrong way, peaches on top, but it still came out. Everyone loved it! I shall try it again doing it the right way this time. Thanks!
Thank you, LaToya. I’m glad they enjoyed them. Hope you are well.
